Nature Challenge Teacher's Guide

Secondary, Elementary, Middle

Description

The Nature Challenge Teacher's Guide is the Suzuki Foundation's attempt to bring the ten widely known action challenges into the classroom. The key concepts taught through the twenty lessons are:

  • Everything in nature is connected.
  • Change is all about personal decisions.
  • There are small everyday actions and choices we can make that have a profound impact on nature.
  • We learn best by doing and experiencing.
  • Good discussion can be controversial.

"The introductory lessons prepare the students for learning, as well as establish clarity around their existing knowledge and the ideas, that everything is connected to nature. The core lessons explore each of the ten small ways to make a big impact. In some cases there are alternative approaches offered for different grade levels or learning styles. At the end, a few lessons are offered to bring the ideas together through reflection and application. The lessons build upon existing knowledge and enable learning through a variety of formats."

In addition to the twenty lessons, the guide includes:

  • Rationale. p.7
  • A description of the consistent lesson format. p.9
  • Lesson overviews with very brief descriptions. p. 10
  • Curriculum connections for grades four through seven. p.12
  • Ideas for selecting lessons based on the time you have to teach. p.19
  • Background resources. p.22
  • A glossary. p.116
