Eco 360

Rethink Your Plastic Waste

Secondary, Elementary, Middle

Description

The Eco 360 program enables students to imagine a world without waste by closing the loop of a product’s life cycle and creating a circular economy. Students explore the origin of plastics, their use in our daily lives, how they end up in the environment as waste and how we can ensure that plastics are cycled back into the economy after their use and out of the environment to realize their full potential while protecting our planet. The program challenges students to actively engage in creating a circular economy by exploring innovative solutions for reducing, reusing, and recycling plastic waste. The program activities are grouped by topics while designed to be completed in their entirety; teachers may opt to use individual lessons.

Program Activities for Grade 3 to 8 students include:

  • All About Plastics
  • Circular Economy and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals
  • How Plastic Harms the Environment
  • Imagine a Waste-Free Economy
  • Your Plastic Consumption Footprint
  • Plastic Remake
  • Plastic in Our Oceans
  • Sorting Your Waste
  • Taking Inspiration from Nature
  • Types of Plastics
  • Why do we have Plastic Waste in our Environments?

Program Activities for Grades 9-12 include:

Once students have completed some or all of the activities, they can extend their learning by participating in the Take the Eco 360 Challenge. This challenge invites students to develop a solution that eliminates plastic waste from our environment. Students will pitch their innovation plans in a creative format (video, presentation, etc.) and submit their ideas.

General Assessment

Recommendation of how and where to use it

The program features a variety of learning activities with background information, educator guides, assessment tools, videos, and easy-to-use lesson plans. The topic is critical and current. The activities and challenges emphasize student inquiry and incorporate authentic, real-world challenges. They incorporate hands-on activities, digital simulations, and explorations of environmental issues that students are concerned about. The additional resources attached to the lessons allow teachers and students to explore the issue beyond the lesson's objectives. The website provides free online support for educators implementing the programs and challenges in their classrooms.
